(by Ife Rodney / Source: https://eternaldermatology.com/restylane-dermal-fillers)
Are you thinking about fillers?
Have you ever walked past the mirror and do a double-take? On closer inspection, you see some unwanted wrinkles, folds, and it looks a little dull. When you touch your skin, it’s not as baby smooth as you remember. In fact, those wrinkles seem to be getting deeper. On researching online, patients uncover dermal fillers, particularly Restylane dermal fillers and are eager to jump in.
We get patients like these every day who want to look as good as they feel. In most cases, we do recommend Restylane. Before we cover the product, we need to discuss dermal fillers.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are safe, non-toxic substances injected into the skin to fight wrinkles, folds, and the signs of aging. More and more people turn to dermal fillers, with 2.6 million procedures happening in 2018 alone. When a dermatologist or plastic surgeon injects the filler at various depths, the skin responds by absorbing more water and smoothing out. Dermal fillers have several functions:
• It smooths fine lines around the cheeks, eyes, nose, and mouth.
• It’s a popular way to plump up and define lips.
• Dermal fillers can reduce the signs of acne scars.
• It can plump up sunken cheeks and helps contour the face.
• Some even use it for fine lines and wrinkles in the hands.
• Gives the skin a fresh, dewy appearance.
Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. Hyaluronic acid helps the body retain moisture and helps lubricate the joints. When it’s injected, the acid draws more water to the upper layers of the skin, reducing wrinkles, blemishes, and scars. It also enhances collagen production, which is important for the skin’s health, elasticity, and hydration.
What are Restylane dermal fillers?
Several companies create and provide dermal fillers, and Restylane is one of the premier brands. Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler made primarily with hyaluronic acid. It appears as a clear gel, and when injected, Restylane can add extra fullness and volume. It can also enhance the body’s hyaluronic production. We use Restylane, along with other fillers, to address specific wrinkles, giving a younger appearance. This filler targets medium to severe-depth wrinkles at the dermal layer, specifically:
• Nasolabial folds or smile lines (the lines that form from the nose to the mouth)
• Marionette Lines (the lines that start from the mouth to the chin)
• And the corners of your mouth (small wrinkles that spread out when you smile or laugh)
Restylane has a 95% satisfaction rate and may last more than one year after injection.
No one size fits all: The different brands of Restylane.
There are a few different Restylane products you should know. Restylane is the original dermal filler that specifically targets nasolabial folds. The original formulation also helps to plump up the lips.
Restylane-L
Restylane-L is the same Restylane formula with 0.3% Lidocaine. Lidocaine is a common anesthetic that helps numb the pain and discomfort during the procedure. Restylane-L may also help with subsequent inflammation, which means you’ll see results a bit faster.
Restylane Refyne
Restylane Refyne specifically targets laugh lines. It contains the same components as Restylane-L but includes its proprietory XpresHAn Technology.™ This improves the consistency and application of the gel, giving a soft, natural look quickly. It’s not uncommon for your dermatologist to use Restylane Refyne in one space and Restylane-L in another.
Restylane Defyne
Sometimes, our Nasolabial folds and Marionette lines can extend beyond the nose and mouth to the chin. Severe wrinkling can also cause your chin to appear shrunken or retracted. Restylane Defyne focuses on the lower face and can significantly improve wrinkles and augment the chin. When patients use Defyne, there’s an over 90% satisfaction rate with the chin augmentation.
Smoother hands with Restylane Lyft
We don’t only lose volume and develop wrinkles in our faces. Our hands also suffer from the effects of aging and the environment. They can look weathered, veiny, and lose their luster. Restylane Lyft is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler for your face and the back of the hands. With targeted filler injections, you can reduce the wrinkles on the back of the hands, giving a younger appearance. Your dermatologist can also use Restylane Lyft on your face, addressing wrinkles and laugh lines.
Lip fillers with Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse
Your lips need love too! Restylane Silk addresses wrinkles right around the lip (your perioral lines) and can give the lips themselves more volume. Silk contains the same ingredients as Restylane-L but is specially formulated to last a long time in the lips.
Restylane Kysse is the latest product and was FDA-approved in May 2020. It’s a lip filler designed to improve your lips’ volume, texture, and even color. Restylane Kysse lasts for one year and is in high demand. Its XpresHAn Technology.™ focuses on natural-looking lips during different expressions, and you’ll see results with less filler when compared to the competitors.
What’s the difference between Botox and Restylane?
Botox is the first and one of the most popular on the market when it comes to injectables. It differs from Restylane in terms of core ingredients and applications but both can work together to give amazing results:
Botox
Botox is an injectable substance made from Botulinum toxin Type A. Used in small amounts, Botox reduces the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily stopping the communication between nerves and muscles. Doctors use Botox for improving deep wrinkles, Crow’s feet, and frown lines. Over the years, the FDA approved more treatments like reducing sweating, neck spasms, and lazy eye.
Restylane
Restylane is a brand of dermal fillers that uses hyaluronic acid to plump up the skin and smooth our wrinkles. Instead of stopping muscle contraction, these fill in spaces to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Other popular brands of dermal fillers include RHA, Belotero, Juvederm, Radiesse, and Sculptra.
What to expect before, during, and after Restylane fillers
All geared up for your filler appointment? Your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon should make sure that the process is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Restylane procedures often start with an initial consultation with your dermatologist.
It’s here you get to discuss any problem areas, learn about the benefits, and address any concerns or reservations.
Your dermatologist will want a detailed account of your medical history and current medications. If you’re generally healthy with no known severe allergies, you’re a good candidate!
To be on the safe side, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should delay the injectable. If you have skin sores, cysts, rashes, or other skin infections, address these first before trying fillers.
Your dermatologist will mark off the problem areas, discuss the type of Restylane, the units needed, then schedule the procedure.
During the procedure
In the week leading up to your appointment, you should avoid drinking alcohol, which can delay healing. Your Restylane appointment should take about 30 minutes, and it’s common to schedule it during lunch hours. Your dermatologist might provide a numbing agent. However, it’s common for brands like Restylane-L to contain the numbing agent Lidocaine, mixed into the filler substance. Based on the areas addressed, your dermatologist injects one or more syringes of filler into your skin.
After your Restylane treatment
Once the Restylane is in place, the dermatologist will keep you for a few minutes to make sure there are no immediate reactions. There will be some light bleeding, bruising, and swelling. The filler may take up to two weeks to settle. At this point, you’ll see significant differences in your wrinkles, folds, and appearance. Your job for the next two weeks is to manage any possible side effects. Over several months, the filler will gradually dissipate. You’ll want to schedule a follow-up appointment at least 4 to 6 months after treatment.
Potential side effects and aftercare
With any medical procedure, there are some risks and potential side effects. Restylane has some minor side effects, which, of course, depend on how it’s administered. After your filler session, it’s common to experience bruising and swelling in the injection area. Redness and tenderness can also happen. These side effects typically last a few days. However, there are cases where the side effects extend to 2 weeks. In rare instances, serious side effects include:
• Hyperpigmentation (especially in people with skin of color or darker skin types)
• Injection site scabbing
• Infection
• Hardness/Nodule formation
• Reoccurrence of cold sores
If you’re getting Restylane for the first time, you are more likely to experience minor side effects like swelling and bruising compared to someone else with previous injectables. To keep the side effects at a minimum, it’s essential to follow some simple aftercare:
• Avoid picking, scratching, or rubbing the injected areas.
• Use ice packs to manage bruising and swelling, particularly in the first week after treatment.
• Avoid other facial procedures (chemical peels, microneedling, etc.) for at least 24 hours after Restylane.
• Take aspirin as needed.
• Avoid exposure to the sun for at least one week or until the swelling has stopped.
If there is pain or signs of hyperpigmentation or a hard nodule, call your dermatologist for more advice.
How long do Restylane fillers last?
How long fillers will last is the biggest question from our patients, as many want a solid return on their investment.
What makes Restylane products unique is their ability to last for significant periods, although the exact length varies. Restylane, once administered correctly, can last between 6 to 12 months. Some patients have shorter timeframes, and others have longer timeframes. Lip fillers tend to last about six months.
Factors that affect fillers include the injection site and how much filler is used by your dermatologist. The body metabolizes the hyaluronic acid over time, which is also a factor. To get the best out of your filler, make sure to follow a dermatologist-recommended skincare routine.
