Several companies create and provide dermal fillers, and Restylane is one of the premier brands. Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler made primarily with hyaluronic acid. It appears as a clear gel, and when injected, Restylane can add extra fullness and volume. It can also enhance the body’s hyaluronic production. We use Restylane, along with other fillers, to address specific wrinkles, giving a younger appearance. This filler targets medium to severe-depth wrinkles at the dermal layer, specifically:

• Nasolabial folds or smile lines (the lines that form from the nose to the mouth)

No one size fits all: The different brands of Restylane.

What to expect before, during, and after Restylane fillers

All geared up for your filler appointment? Your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon should make sure that the process is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Restylane procedures often start with an initial consultation with your dermatologist.

It’s here you get to discuss any problem areas, learn about the benefits, and address any concerns or reservations.

Your dermatologist will want a detailed account of your medical history and current medications. If you’re generally healthy with no known severe allergies, you’re a good candidate!

To be on the safe side, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should delay the injectable. If you have skin sores, cysts, rashes, or other skin infections, address these first before trying fillers.

Your dermatologist will mark off the problem areas, discuss the type of Restylane, the units needed, then schedule the procedure.

During the procedure

In the week leading up to your appointment, you should avoid drinking alcohol, which can delay healing. Your Restylane appointment should take about 30 minutes, and it’s common to schedule it during lunch hours. Your dermatologist might provide a numbing agent. However, it’s common for brands like Restylane-L to contain the numbing agent Lidocaine, mixed into the filler substance. Based on the areas addressed, your dermatologist injects one or more syringes of filler into your skin.

After your Restylane treatment

Once the Restylane is in place, the dermatologist will keep you for a few minutes to make sure there are no immediate reactions. There will be some light bleeding, bruising, and swelling. The filler may take up to two weeks to settle. At this point, you’ll see significant differences in your wrinkles, folds, and appearance. Your job for the next two weeks is to manage any possible side effects. Over several months, the filler will gradually dissipate. You’ll want to schedule a follow-up appointment at least 4 to 6 months after treatment.

Potential side effects and aftercare

With any medical procedure, there are some risks and potential side effects. Restylane has some minor side effects, which, of course, depend on how it’s administered. After your filler session, it’s common to experience bruising and swelling in the injection area. Redness and tenderness can also happen. These side effects typically last a few days. However, there are cases where the side effects extend to 2 weeks. In rare instances, serious side effects include:

• Hyperpigmentation (especially in people with skin of color or darker skin types)

• Injection site scabbing

• Infection

• Hardness/Nodule formation

• Reoccurrence of cold sores

If you’re getting Restylane for the first time, you are more likely to experience minor side effects like swelling and bruising compared to someone else with previous injectables. To keep the side effects at a minimum, it’s essential to follow some simple aftercare:

• Avoid picking, scratching, or rubbing the injected areas.

• Use ice packs to manage bruising and swelling, particularly in the first week after treatment.

• Avoid other facial procedures (chemical peels, microneedling, etc.) for at least 24 hours after Restylane.

• Take aspirin as needed.

• Avoid exposure to the sun for at least one week or until the swelling has stopped.

If there is pain or signs of hyperpigmentation or a hard nodule, call your dermatologist for more advice.

How long do Restylane fillers last?

How long fillers will last is the biggest question from our patients, as many want a solid return on their investment.

What makes Restylane products unique is their ability to last for significant periods, although the exact length varies. Restylane, once administered correctly, can last between 6 to 12 months. Some patients have shorter timeframes, and others have longer timeframes. Lip fillers tend to last about six months.
